Collaboration Nation: Tech in the Workplace

Group projects. Those two words are either the most exciting thing you’ll hear throughout the semester or the thing you’re most dreading. If you’re like the majority of college students, group projects aren’t exactly your favorite thing in the world. But guess what? Real life is full of collaborating and working together. You can’t get by in the workplace without having to work with at least one other person. Lucky for you, technology is ever-evolving, making working together easier than ever before. From something as basic as Google Drive, to something as complex as a hologram of a person from across the globe, technology allows us to work together in new and exciting ways.

Google Docs still blows my mind to this day. Its just so crazy to me to think that people from all over can see and edit the same exact document as me in real time. There’s also always that scare factor when one person moves something and it freaks everyone else out because they think they did it. It sure beats the everyone HAVING to be in the same place to type up a paper like I had to do in high school! Am I getting old or was a just technology illiterate back then?

Here is a cool list of some collaboration technologies. (Pozin, 2017)

But even with the best technology, sometimes people still just don’t work well together. Humans are humans and not everyone is going to always get along. That’s why it is important to make sure you have social events for your employees/coworkers to get to know each other outside of work. It’s also important to make sure they participate in team building exercises so that they can grow together as a team and work better in groups. The book “Creative Confidence” by Tom Kelley and David Kelley has some good activities to try that can both get your associates to work together better as well as be more creative!

why technology alone isn’t enough

However, if you ARE tech savvy, it ultimately WILL lead to more job opportunities because that’s just how the world is going. Everything is online and digitized. So, it’s never a bad idea to stay updated on all the latest technology, including new collaboration technology!
